Getting the Right Reps for your Kicker
At the youth and High School levels, place kickers are often the overlooked position until it comes down to the final seconds where a game can be won with a field goal. Arguably this is one of the most difficult positions since a kicker must perform under pressure and be ready to take advantage of every opportunity. For every single attempt a great kicker faces, they will always be mentally and physically focused. It’s said to take 10,000 hours to master your craft, but there are ways to get better at kicking more quickly by putting in the hard and honest reps. We can all think of several examples where kickers REALLY mattered, but here’s a few that stand out for me… As a passionate San Diego Chargers fan in 2010, it was tough to watch Nate Kaeding miss three field goal attempts in the AFC Championship game against the Jets. For those of you lucky enough to miss this game, the final score was 17-14 meaning those three missed field goals cost the Chargers the game, the AFC Championship, and a shot at the Super Bowl. Missed field goals can be heart wrenching. Another epic horror story is the infamous […]
Tacklebar Safe Contact. Sound Fundamentals.
TackleBar™ Football is a safer approach that preserves the tradition and fundamentals of the game. TackleBar™ is for today’s game of football. The mission of TackleBar Football is to dramatically reduce both head injuries and all other injuries related to tackling, while at the same time preserving the tradition and spirit of the game. The TackleBar harness is designed to promote proper defensive fundamentals and heads up play. TackleBar Football is currently being implemented in leagues throughout the nation. TackleBar™ Football TackleBar Football is designed to facilitate safe contact and sound fundamentals while maintaining game speed and discipline. Players wear a TackleBar harness around the midsection, which includes two removable foam bars held in the lower back area. Players must track and engage with proper tackling fundamentals to wrap the ball carrier and rip off one of the foam bars. This design teaches players to utilize the recommended shoulder tackling technique, and helps dramatically reduce injuries that occur when tackling players to the ground. Practice and Scrimmage Accessory Many youth and high school level programs are utilizing TackleBar equipment during practices and scrimmages to keep contact at safe levels, while maintaining sound technique and fundamentals. This approach ensures players stay […]
I’m a brain scientist and I let my son play football
My name is Peter Cummings. I am a forensic pathologist and a neuropathologist, which means I study brain trauma for a living. I am also a football coach and I let my 11-year-old son play football. I may be the only neuropathologist on Earth who lets his kid play football. By Dr. Peter Cummings Coming to this decision was a serious undertaking and the result of many hours spent pouring over medical journals and football rulebooks. Before I began this journey, football was banned in my house. I wouldn’t even watch it on TV because I didn’t want my son to see it and develop a desire to play. Despite my efforts, he discovered football via a video game. He immediately fell in love with the sport and I was forced to do some serious soul searching: Should I allow him to pursue his interest and play? Honestly, I was scared of CTE. CTE stands for “chronic traumatic encephalopathy”; in real words it means damage to the brain caused by repetitive injury. The hallmark of CTE is the deposition of a protein called ‘tau’ in the brain. Tau has a number of functions, including stabilizing the structure of nerve cells. […]
